The name (Guwahati) is a combination of two words: "Guwa" meaning areca nut and "Hat" meaning market. Guwahati is the commercial nerve centre of the North-East.

Dispur is the capital of Assam, a state in northeast India. This place that existed as a locality on the outskirts of Guwahati, took its place as the capital of Assam in 1973. This was after Shillong, the erstwhile capital became the capital of the state of Meghalaya that was carved out of Assam.
