Maha Bodhi Temples, Maha Bodhi Temples tours, Visit Maha Bodhi Temples of Bihar, Temple tour of Maha Bodhi TemplesLocation : Bihar
Built in : 3rd Century B.C.
Built by : Emperor Ashoka Best Season : Between February And April.

The architecture of Maha Bodhi Temples is unparalleled in North India. It is supposed that in the 3rd century B.C emperor Ashoka built this temple. The canopy formation of Maha Bodhi Temples is very unlike and attractive from temples usually found in North India. To maintain the balance of the main tower there are four smaller towers.

The king of Lanka, Meghvarn had constructed a monastery towards the North of the Bodhi tree. This construction was done during the period of Samudragupta. In the 12th century the fierce attack of the Muslim invaders had destroyed the temple entirely.

In 1876 the ruler of Burma in agreement with the British government of India had rebuilt the temple on the remains of the older structure. The Mahabodhi temple has a huge Idol of Buddha in the 'bhumisparsa mudra'. Maha Bodhi Temples is bounded by a little pillars and delicate lattice work. These are a major attraction for the tourist who visit the place

Maha Bodhi Temples, Maha Bodhi Temples tours, Visit Maha Bodhi Temples of Bihar, Temple tour of Maha Bodhi TemplesThe Mahabodhi Temple stands east to the Bodhi Tree. Its architectural effect is superb. its basement is 48 square feet and it rises in the form of a slender Pyramid, till it reaches its neck, which is cylindrical in shape. The total height of the temple is 170 feet and on the top of the temple are Chatras which symbolise sovereignty of religion. Four towers on its four corners rise gracefully giving the holy sturcture a poise and balance. This sacred edifice is like a grand banner unfurled by time to proclaim to the world the pious efforts of the Buddha to solve the knots of human miseries to ascend above worldly problems and to attain transcedental peace through wisdom, good conduct and disciplined life. Inside the temple in the main sanctum, on an altar, is a colossal image of Buddha in a sitting posture touching the earth by his right hand. In this posture the Buddha accomplished the supreme enlightenment. The statue is of black stone but it has been guided by the devotees. The entire courtyard of the temple is studded with a large number of varieties of stupas--votive, decorative, memorative. These stupas are of all sizes built during the past 2500 years ago. Most of them are extremely elegant in structural beauty.
