The Karanji Lake situated at the footsteps of Chamundi Hills is spread over an area of 90 acres. One of the largest lakes in Karnataka, the lake affords a charming view of the Lalitha Mahal Palace.
Many species of migratory birds have made the lush vegetation at the zoo their breeding site, which is largely attributable to the rich herbage and tiny marshy islands provided by the lake.
Karanji Lake, a protected area under the Mysore Zoo authorities, has the Chamundi hills as the backdrop that accentuates the charm and tranquility of the atmosphere.
A butterfly park housing a plethora of plant species to attract butterflies has been set up in Karanji Lake by the Zoo authorities on an experimental basis.

Home of the presiding deity of Mysore , Chamundi Hills can be reached by a 13 kms road or by climbing the 100 steps built by the Mysore maharaja in the 17th century.
Half way along the steps is the majestic 4.8 metre monolith of Nandi, the lord Shiva's bull. The summit offers a panoramic view of Mysore lakes, parks and palaces.
