Six Feet Tall Lingam
Gokarna is well-known for the Atmalinga in the ancient temple situated here. The six feet tall Shivalingam is enclosed inside the 'peetham', and it can be seen just once in 40 years, when the 'Ashta Bandana Kumbhabhishekam' is performed.
There are also holy place to Vinayaka, Chandikeswara, Adi Gokarneswara and Dattatreya. Gokarnanayaki is also known as Taamragowri, and her shrine is behind the sanctum.
Legend
According to legend, Lord Ganapathi tricked Ravana into putting down the Linga after
long penance.
But Ravana was not capable to lift the linga from the earth again. And ever since the linga came to be well-known as Mahabala.
