Kumarakom Backwaters
Kumarakom is known as God’s Own
Country. Kumarakom is a little village and offers Ayurvedic Massages,
Meditation, Yoga, Boating and Fishing facilities. Kumarakom is located
10 km from Kottayam. The Pathiramanal Island, near Komarakom has a
mythological significance to it. It is believed that the Island was
formed when a young Brahmin dived into the Vembanad lake to perform his
evening ablutions. Legend says that due to this water gave way for land
to rise and thus this Island was formed.
Kumarakom is one of the well known
backwater destinations in Kerala. Boating and fishing facilities are
available at the Tourist retreats in Kumarakom. The village of Kumarakom
is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake, and is part of the
Kuttanad region.
The bird sanctuary here, is a favorite haunt of migratory birds .
Egrets, darters, herons, teal, waterfowl, cuckoo, wild duck and
migratory birds like the Siberian stork that live here in flocks are a
fascination for visitors. The best way to watch the birds of the Kumarakom sanctuary is a boat trip round the islands.
