The Devikulam hills in Kerala can trace their name back to an ancient epic episode according to which Sita Devi, the consort of Lord Rama stayed in these hills for a while.
Located at an altitude of 1,000 meters above the sea level Devikulam enraptures you with its magical greens, fresh flowers and little birds that chirp natural tunes. The placid lake that lies in the midst of Devikulam hills is a transparent, clean and glittering world of water magic.
Devikulam is located at a distance of 149 kilometers from Cochin in Kerala, South India and is nothing short of a un spoilt virgin hideout.
The spice plantations in the beautiful Devikulam hills enshroud the emerald greens in a fragrant mist that lift up your spirits to a state of elated bliss. The neatly clipped tea bushes stand in manicured rows interspersed with tall fruit and gum trees offer soothing vistas.
Pilgrims take holy dips in the strikingly beautiful Devikulam Lake, adventure seekers go mountaineering, hill climbing and nature trekking while peace seekers simply laze in the lap of virgin greens.
Kerala Flexi Tours also arranges for you to tour the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary that offers a natural habitat to wild animals, insects and hundreds of bird species.
PRIME ATTRACTIONS
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
North of Devikulam, around 60 kms away, sprawls the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. With a sandalwood forest on the nearer end, it falls away as a thorny, rain-shadowed scrub jungle found nowhere else in Kerala.
This is where one could find the highly endangered species of both the Grizzled Giant Squirrel (last worldwide count: less than 200) and the Star Tortoise, in addition to a large population of Gaur.
Deep within the sanctuary, one comes across the massive Thoovanam Falls on the river Chinnar. Recently erected watchtowers rise high above the vegetation and permit a fascinating view of the game.
HOW TO GET THERE
The ascent to Devikulam from Cochin takes 4 ½ hours (149 kms), while from Kottayam one can reach there in just under 4 hours (132 kms
