Panchalankurichi and Kattabomman Memorial Fort

Panchalankurichi and Kattabomman Memorial Fort, Panchalankurichi and Kattabomman Memorial Fort travel, PanchalankurichiPanchalankurichi, is a small but historic village around 70km from Tirunelveli and18 km from Tuticorin. From here the great warrior Katta Bomman popularly known as 'Veerapandiya Kattabomman' raised his voice against the British regime in the 17th Century A.D.

The existing memorial fort was constructed in 1974, by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The memorial Hall, have beautiful paintings on the walls depicting the heroic deeds of the saga which gives a good idea about the history of the period. Sri Devi Jakkammal Temple, the hereditary Goddess of Kattabomman, is located near the fort. A cemetery of British soldiers are also seen near the fort. The remnants of the old fort is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. At Kayatar, near Tirunelveli the place where he was hanged, there is another memorial for Kattabomman.

Within the Memorial Hall, there are beautiful paintings on the walls depicting the heroic deeds of the saga. The snap shot of the 5th generation heir of Veerapandya Katthabomman is also shown over here. His name is "Veemaraja" alias "Jegaveera Pandya Subbramania Kattabomma Durai". "Bommu" means God Sashtha Ayyanam Swamy (also spelt as Sashtha Ayyanam Swami). The British gave the sentence of death by hanging Kattabomman and others on charges of treason.

INFORMATION FOR THE VISITORS
Tourists can visit the fort from 8.00am to 1.00pm and 2.00pm to 6.00pm.

HOW TO GET THERE

 Air : The nearest airport to Tuticorin is at Madurai.

Rail  There is a railway station at Tuticorin.

Road : Tuticorin is a main port city of India and is well connected by road with the important cities and towns of south India. Regular buses are available from Tuticorin to Panchalankurichi.

WHERE TO STAY
Tuticorin has good accommodation facilities, which are worth for an overnight stay.
