Omampuliyur is situated at a distance of 18-km from Kutralam in Tirunelveli district. There is a shrine dedicated to Dakshinamurti and it is also one of the five Puliyurs associated with Vyagrapadar.

It is believed that Lord Shiva is said to have revealed the Pranva Upadesam to Parvati here. A hunter who climbed the vilva tree as he was pursued by a tiger attained salvation here. Vyagrapadar (the saint with tiger's claws and feet) is said to have worshipped here.

The temple has inscriptions belonging to the period Pallavas, which speak about the endowments made by Kopperunchingan. In front of the Mandapam one can see the images illustrating the 'Stalapuranam' (origin) of this temple. One of these depicts Lord Shiva blessing Vishnu with the Chakrayudam while the others depict five of the Puliyurs.

An image of Nataraja made of stone is seen on the niche reserved for Dakshinamurti in the sanctum, while Dakshinamurti occupies the grand Sabha, usually set for Natarajar. Lord Shiva here is also known as "Pranava Vyagrapureeswarar".

Rail : The nearest railway station is at Tenkasi.

Road : There are regular buses to the temple from Tirunelveli and Kutralam (also spelt as Courtallam).
