Horticulture
Tripura is land of high hills, hillocks, interspersed with rivers and valleys having moderately warm and humid climate, well distributed annual rainfall of 2500 mm. The terrain soil and climate of the State of Tripura are ideally suited for rain-fed Horticulture.
Fruits like Pineapple, Jackfruit, Orange, Litchi, Cashewnut, Coconut, Lime, and Lemon are produced in abundance. Fruit crops in the State are grown on hillocks, availing the well distributed rainfall without application of any fertilizers or chemicals.
Tripura is fortunate to have agrciultural as well as climatic conditions suitable for production of a large variety of horticultural crops chief among which include "Queen" and "Kew"; varieties of
pineapple, oranges, lichis and cashew.
Each of these from Tripura is well known in the rest of the country. These products are also free of any chemical residue.
Insipte of this, the Fruit Processing industry in Tripura is at a nascent stage.
The Government has helped the state of Tripura in pineapple processing- NERAMAC
(a Government of India undertaking), has set up a modern Pineapple Juice Concentrate Plant at Nalkata in North Tripura District, with a processing capacity of about
5760 TPA. The Plant at Nalkata is operating at a low level due to non-operation of aseptic filter. However, the same is being rectified and natural juice concentrate will be available from the pineapple season of this millenium year.
