Agartala
The Capital Agartala was founded in 1838 AD by Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya (1830-49 AD).The Agartala Municipality was instituted in 1871 AD during the reign of Maharaja Chandra Manikya (1862-96 AD). The 1st British Political Agent, Mr. A.W.B. Power appointed for hill Tipprah in 1871 AD, was offered the honour of being the Chairman of the Agartala Municipality. The municipality located at the crossing of Latitude N 23 -50` and Longitude E 91-17` covering 3 Sq. Km. Area during that period.
The city is situated in a plain along the Haora River, though the city also extends to the low lying hills on its northern parts.
From 2004 onwards the Agartala Municipal Council has further been extended taking 16 No.of Grams of Dukli R.D.Block,7 No. of Grams of Mohanpur R.D.Block and 2 No.of Grams of Jirania R.D.Block with area of 42.83 sq.k.m. and 1,78,495 nos.of population in addition to the 16 sq.kms and population of 200,000 in 2001 census.
The Agartala city is managed by the Agartala Municipal Council, AMC, which divides the city into many wards and each ward has an elected ward representative or municipal councillor.
The city is the state capital so most of the population is employed in the state & central Government and other Government owned enterprises, such as
ONGC, BSNL, etc.
There is a wide variety of private enterprises also and the main business area of the city Gol Bazaar and Kaman Chowmuhani area which has a huge conglomeration of shops, bazaars, banks, etc.
The city mainly consists of Bengali's and Bengali culture and language predominates the city. The main festivals of city such as Durga Puja and Saraswati puja reflect the influence of the culture of the Bengali's.
Tourist Attractions
Ujjayanta Palace
This royal house, which stands in the Capital city Agartala covering one sq.Km. area was built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya during 1899-1901.It is a two storied mansion, having a mixed type of architecture with three high domes, the central one being 86' high. The magnificent tile floor, curved wooden ceiling and beautifully crafted doors are particularly notable. The palace is set with huge Mughal style gardens, beautified by pools and gardens and tiled floors. Flood lighting and fountains have also added to its beauty.
Kunjaban Palace
A green hillock known as Kunjaban ( a bower) for its scenic beauty stands to the north of Ujjayanta palace at a distance of about 1 Km. Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya (1909-1923) selected this beautiful place for building a suburban palace for retreat and constructed a palace in 1917 which was named as
'Pushbanta Palace'. The Maharaja himself being gifted artist is said to have drawn the plan of the palace and its adjoining garden.
Old Agartala
Five miles from Agartala is Old Agartala, famous for its shrine of the Chaturdas Devta Bari - temple of fourteen Gods. The images represent, only the heads of the gods and goddesses, worshipped here, and are made of an alloy of eight metals.
Neermahal
Neermahal a summer resort built in 1930 by the late Maharaja Birbikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur is about 55 kms away from Agaratala. It is built in the middle of a lake called Rudrasagar with a total area of about 5.35 sq.km away from Agartala. It is the only lake palace in Eastern India.

FAIRS & FESTIVALS
The Durga Puja season is generally the busiest time of the year and one can then experience the richness of Indian cultural extravaganza. Agartala is also known for its tribal festivals like Karachi, and Garia Puja.
Getting There
Air : Agartala is connected by airlines flights with Calcutta, Guwahati, Delhi.
Rail : The two nearest railway stations are Kumarghat (160 kms) and Dharama Nagar (200 kms). Both the stations on the North-East Frontier Railway, connected with Lumding & Guwahati, where as Lumding and Guwahati
are connected with Calcutta and other major stations in India
Road : Good motorable raods connect Agartala with Silchar- 288 kms, Guwahati 599 kms, Shillong 499 kms, Dharmanagar- 200 kms. Tripura Road Transport Corporation buses connect Silchar, Shillong and Dharma Nagar to Agartala.
