Standing at Alfred Park, the Public Library was opened as a memorial to the friendship of Lord Thornhill, the then Commissioner of Allahabad and Mr, Mayne, the then Collector. It was called the
'Thornhill and Mayne Memorial'.
Designed by R. Roskell Bayne, the Public Library is an outstanding model of Gothic style of structural design.
The memorial has a arrogant tower and arcaded cloisters. In 1879, the library was shifted to the present premises at Alfred Park. It has about 75,000 books, besides a treasure trove of manuscripts and journals.
