 The craft of Wood Carving in
Uttranchal is very popular, specially of Doors. In the olden days,
carving on the main entrance door was considered a status symbol. The
family which had more carving over the doors had high status in the
society. These beautifully ornamented doors and windows still attract
art lovers. Craft-persons of the Uttaranchal had mastered the art of
wood carving. The wood carving of Garhwal & Kumaon are famous for its
simple and beautiful designs. There are very few houses which now have
the carved wooden doors because of increase in expenses.
Artists of hills also highlight natural beauty in their carvings. Those
Artists are very god fearing and this can be witnessed in their art as
many images of god and goddesses can also be seen accompanying the
craft. The designs also have carvings of birds, flowers, mountains,
fruits and even the human figures. The crafts persons also used to do
specific latticework to fill in the open space of the windows in order
